About Nils Dacke

Nils Dacke was an uprising leader in Småland who, in the 1540s, fought against the Swedish king, Gustav Wasa. Dacke fought against injustice and oppression, but saw themselves defeated in 1543. He injured and hid in the ”Dacke Cave”, about 200 meters from the cottages (on the other side of the ski slope) before he was found of the king’s men, and was executed. Dacke is an icon for Virserum. He stands statue in the center and you see him on the welcome-signs, when You arrive in Virserum. Dacke has become a symbol of freedom and rebellion against oppression and injustice.
